The huge but little-known Selous is one of the great last wildernesses in Africa. It is African oldest wildlife reserve and with 50,000 sq. km, it is the largest on the continent too. The sheer diversity of its landscape attracts a wide variety of animals. The wildlife in this pristine reserve is impressive, with almost 120,000 buffaloes, 40,000 hippos, 4,000 lions and the largest population of wild dogs (1,300)

Tanzania largest river, the Rufiji is a major water source and the reason for Selous rich wildlife and landscapes. This fast flowing river divides the reserve into two parts. The northern part includes lush grasslands with channels lagoons and palms. Especially in the dry season the abundance of animals around the river banks is outstanding. Therefore it is a perfect place for game drives and photography. The southern part of the parks below the Rufiji River consists mainly of miombo woodland and is not open to tourists.

Selous is an UNESCO World Heritage site due to its untouched land and abundance of wildlife. It teems with wildlife. Selous is home to the world is largest population of wild dogs and one of the highest African elephant population in the world. Also the giraffe population here has become so large that the reserve has a nickname GIRAFFIC PARK. Other animals you can spot in this enormous park are the rare black rhino, lions, crocodiles, hippos, cheetahs, leopards, monkeys and lots of beautiful birds.
